The default SIP port used for VoIP services worldwide is UDP port 5060.
It’s the standard for SIP-based communication and is used by most VoIP phones, apps, and PBX systems by default.
Why we recommend port 5060
Port 5060 is:
-
Recognised and supported by nearly all VoIP devices and platforms
-
Easy to configure, since most equipment uses it by default
-
A key part of SIP’s global standard, ensuring maximum compatibility
Whenever possible, we strongly suggest you use port 5060 to avoid setup issues.
But what if 5060 doesn't work?
Sometimes, port 5060 may be blocked or interfered with. This can happen if:
-
Your modem or router blocks SIP traffic (some do this by default)
-
Your firewall restricts certain ports
-
Your ISP limits VoIP usage or has port filtering enabled
-
SIP ALG (Application Layer Gateway) is active, causing problems
-
You’re on a shared, public, or corporate network with strict rules
If calls aren’t registering, calls are failing to connect, or you see timeouts, this could be the cause.
Try an alternative: SIP port 5071
Voyced also supports SIP over port 5071, which works exactly the same as port 5060 but can help you avoid network issues.
-
It’s a fully supported alternative on our platform
-
Same features, performance, and reliability
-
Ideal if your network environment blocks or filters 5060
Just update your SIP settings in your phone, SoftPhone, or PBX to use port 5071 instead of 5060.
Best practice summary
Situation | Suggested Action |
---|---|
Port 5060 works | Use it — it’s the standard and most compatible |
Port 5060 blocked or unreliable | Switch to port 5071 |
Still not working? | Check router settings, firewall, or contact support for help |
If you're unsure whether port 5060 is being blocked, or need help switching to 5071, just reach out. We’re happy to guide you through it.
Tip:
If you're managing your own network or PBX setup, disable SIP ALG on your router if it's active, it often causes more problems than it solves.
