Why is 2FA so much better and safer?

Stronger protection with 2FA

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of protection beyond your password.
When you use an authenticator app instead of just relying on a username and password, you're making it much harder for anyone to break into your account.

Why passwords alone aren’t enough

Usernames and passwords can be:

  • Guessed or stolen through phishing

  • Logged using malware

  • Cracked using brute-force attacks

Even a strong password isn’t safe if it’s the only barrier.

Why an authenticator app makes the difference

An authenticator app creates a unique code that changes every 30 seconds.
This code is:

  • Only available on your device

  • Not stored in the cloud or sent via SMS

  • Nearly impossible for attackers to guess or intercept

So, even if someone steals your password, they still can’t access your account without that time-sensitive code.

This two-step process greatly reduces the risk of unauthorised access.

Better than SMS-based 2FA

Authenticator apps are much safer than SMS codes. Here’s why:

  • SMS can be intercepted

  • Attackers can perform a SIM swap to steal your number

  • Network-based delivery isn’t always reliable

Authenticator apps, on the other hand:

  • Work offline, no signal or internet needed

  • Are tied to your device, not your phone number

  • Cannot be redirected or spoofed by your mobile provider

This makes them the more secure and dependable option.

Easy to use, even while travelling

Once set up, using an authenticator app is quick and straightforward:

  • Just open the app and enter the code shown

  • No waiting for a text or call

  • No need to rely on mobile signal, perfect for travel or remote areas

  • Most apps also support multiple accounts, so you can secure all your services from one place

Our current recommendations

We’ve reviewed many authenticator apps. Here's what we recommend in 2025:

Best overall: 2FAS

  • Available on iOS, Android, and as browser extensions

  • Clean interface

  • Reliable and simple to use

Also reliable: Ente Auth

  • Secure and open-source

  • A good alternative if you prefer more technical control

Not recommended anymore: Authy

We no longer recommend Authy, despite its popularity in the past.
They’ve:

  • Dropped desktop support

  • Made the app less user-friendly

  • Slowed down updates and improvements

While still functional, it no longer offers the best experience or flexibility.
