To enjoy smooth and stable VoIP calls, your internet connection needs to meet a few key conditions. Let’s walk through them:
1️⃣ A Stable Internet Connection
This is the most important factor.
Even small hiccups in your internet connection can cause call quality issues, or even disconnect your calls entirely.
If your connection frequently drops or fluctuates, you’ll likely experience audio glitches or breaks in the conversation.
2️⃣ Enough Internet Speed
The speed needed depends on the number of calls and the audio quality (codec) being used.
Rule of thumb:
You’ll need about 100 kbps up and down per simultaneous call using standard codecs.
So if you have 3 people making calls at the same time, you’ll need around 300 kbps upload and 300 kbps download.

3️⃣ Good Quality Internet Line
Apart from speed, there are three other technical factors that matter:
✅ Jitter
This happens when voice data arrives out of order, which can cause choppy or jumbled audio.
-
Ideal jitter: Less than 30 ms
✅ Packet Loss
Packet loss means parts of your voice data never make it to the other end.
This causes missing words or silences in your call.
-
Ideal packet loss: 0%, but up to 1% is usually best (with some codecs up to 5% is acceptable even)
-
Anything higher can be problematic, depending on your setup and codec
✅ Latency
Latency is the delay between when you speak and when the other person hears it.
A small delay is okay, but anything longer can disrupt the flow of a conversation.
-
Ideal latency: Less than 150 ms one-way (per ITU-T G.114)
