Capturing local VoIP data stream / Capture a TCP trace

Have we asked you to send a capture or call trace?

Sometimes, we need a bit more detail to help pinpoint a problem. In those cases, we may ask you to send us a trace or capture of the phone call data at your side.

This helps us see what’s happening between your devices and our servers.

Where to learn more

You can find a helpful guide from the creators of Wireshark here:

Quick steps to capture SIP traffic using Wireshark

To check what’s really happening, it’s useful to see the SIP messages being exchanged. SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is used to set up, manage, and end VoIP calls.

You might want to:

  • See if SIP traffic is reaching our servers

  • Check if a firewall is blocking your connection

  • View the details of your SIP messages, like INVITEs or REGISTER

  • See how your devices are trying to connect to Voyced

How to create a SIP capture:

  1. Download and install Wireshark
    Get it free from www.wireshark.org

  2. Choose the right network interface
Open Wireshark, go to Capture > Interfaces, then select the one your device is using (usually Wi-Fi or Ethernet)

  3. Start capturing
Click the start button to begin. Traffic will now appear.

  4. Make a test call or recreate the issue
For example, register your phone with Voyced or try an outbound call.

  5. Stop and save the capture
Once done, stop the capture and save it from the File menu.

Important: Save an unfiltered capture

When saving:

  • In the "Save" window, look for the Packet Range section

  • Choose Captured and All packets

This gives us everything, including possible issues outside SIP, like:

  • Codec or port errors

  • DNS or HTTP failures

  • Other traffic interfering with the call
