IVR / Auto-Attendant says 'no valid input'

If your IVR or Auto-Attendant says "no valid input" after a few seconds, it usually means one of two things:

  • You didn’t press any key

  • You did press a key, but the system didn’t receive or recognise it

Here’s how to check and fix it.

a) You didn’t press a key

You can press a number as soon as the IVR message starts playing, you don’t need to wait until the end.

  • For example, if option 1 is "Sales", you can press 1 right away

  • If set up correctly, the call should go directly to the linked action

If you don’t press anything, the system will eventually time out and play the "no valid input" message.

b) You pressed a key, but the system didn’t recognise it

This is a common issue with some VoIP phones or softphones. The problem usually lies with the DTMF settings (DTMF = Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency, used for keypress tones).

What to check:

  • Go into your phone’s settings and look for DTMF Type

  • The most reliable setting is RFC2833

  • If you're using something else (like Inband or SIP Info), try switching to RFC2833 and test again

Once your device sends the keypresses in the right format, the IVR should work as expected.

Still stuck?
