What is POE and do I need it?

What is POE?

POE stands for Power over Ethernet.
It allows a compatible device to receive both data and power through the same network cable (Ethernet), instead of needing a separate power supply.

This can:

  • Eliminate the need for extra power adapters

  • Free up wall sockets

  • Make installations cleaner and easier, especially in offices or wall-mounted setups

Do I need POE?

That depends on how and where you plan to use your VoIP phones or other networked devices.

POE may be a smart option if:

  • You don’t want to run extra power cables

  • You don’t have power sockets near the phone location

  • You're installing multiple phones in an office

  • You want a tidier setup without separate power bricks

What do I need to use POE?

To use POE, you’ll need one of the following:

Option 1: A POE-capable network switch

  • This is the most common method

  • Only connect POE-compatible devices (like most modern IP phones) to the POE ports of the switch

  • The switch will automatically provide power to the devices that support it

Option 2: A POE injector

  • A small device placed between your network and the device

  • Injects power into the Ethernet cable

  • Often used when you don’t have a POE switch

Note: In many cases, buying a basic power supply for the device may be cheaper than a POE injector, especially if you only need one or two units.

Final tips

  • Check if your phone or device supports POE before ordering, not all models do

  • If you're buying phones in bulk, it may be cheaper long-term to use POE

  • Some devices are sold without power supplies, assuming you'll be using POE, keep this in mind when budgeting
